Heavy Floods Batter Kerala Again, Death Toll Touches 28

At least 28 people have lost their lives in the heavy rains in Kerala in the past few days. Since there are missing cases, there are fears the death toll would rise.

As the western regions of the Kottayam district and Idukki have witnessed massive landslides and landslips along with flash floods, several houses have been washed away.

In Idukki, the tourists were left stranded for hours since the roads were blocked following landslides and landslips.

Kottayam and Idukki are two of the worst affected districts in the state.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday morning called an emergency meeting to take stock of the situation in the rain-affected areas, mainly the central Kerala districts.

As per the latest weather forecast, heavy rains will lash Kerala beginning Wednesday. An alert has been issued in eight of the 14 districts of the state.

In the wake of heavy rains in the catchment areas and the eastern hilly regions of Kerala, water levels are rising in various dams. Meanwhile, the Kerala government has cautioned that shutters of certain dams will be raised, which will lead to a rise in water levels of rivers in the south and central Kerala.

Thousands of people have been evacuated, and 184 relief camps have been set up across the state, where over 8,000 people are being provided food, bedding and cloth.
