Established in 1958 as the Central Institute of English by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the institution has undergone tremendous changes since its inception. Originally located in Hyderabad, now the University boasts of two campuses in Lucknow and Shillong. In 2006, the institute was given the status of a central university by an act of parliament. The university now offers undergraduate, graduate, doctoral as well as part-time diplomas and certificates in several languages such as English and Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Turkish in the areas of Teacher Education, Literature, Linguistics, Interdisciplinary and Cultural Studies. The university has signed MoUs with several foreign universities ranging from SOAS, London to Universite Paris 8 to provide global exposure to its students. The main campus at Hyderabad has 7 schools with 26 departments and offers courses based on the CBCS or Choice-Based Credit System.
The Hyderabad campus offers a unique post-graduate (M.A) in English with a system called the cafeteria system. Essentially what it means is that the students get to choose what they want to study by picking and choosing courses based on the credit system. They can also choose courses from different departments as well as different universities to support their academic and intellectual paths. This system allows the students to choose inter-disciplinary, intra-disciplinary courses, skill-oriented papers (even from other disciplines according to their learning needs, interests, and aptitude) and offers more flexibility to the students. In the MA English programme, the students are offered four different possibilities to earn a degree in:
MA in the teaching of English as a second language,
MA Literary and Culture Studies and
MA in English literature
One has the freedom to design their own courses on the basis of one’s interests. Admission of Indian students hinges on the applicants’ performance in a common online admission test conducted at various centers across India. These centers are notified every year in the advertisement. Foreign students do not have to take the admission test but need to get a specified score in either IELTS or TOEFL. The students must have a bachelor’s degree from recognized universities with a minimum of 55% marks to be eligible for the entrance test and admission. For further information, please click here.
