A 19-year-old girl from Kerala was allegedly shot dead in Montgomery, the capital of Alabama in the United States. The deceased, identified as Mariam Susan Mathew, daughter of Boban Mathew and Bincy of Edapally Parambil Veettil near Thiruvalla in Pathanamthitta district, was asleep in her house when bullets from the upper floor allegedly pierced through the ceiling and killed her.
Her neighbour is suspected to be the assailant. The Montgomery police department has initiated the investigation in the case.
In a release, Fr Johnson Pappachan of Malankara Orthodox Church Diocese of South-West America said Mariam Susan Mathew sustained bullets from the gun of an occupant on the upper floor of her house. She was declared dead on the scene, added the release.
According to reports, steps are being taken to take the body back to Kerala after completing legal formalities.
Boban Mathew is the Diocesan Council member of Ahmedabad Diocese of Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. Dr Geevarghese Mar Yulios Metropolitan expressed condolences on behalf of the Diocese.
The incident took place a few after a businessman from Kerala, Sajan Mathew, was shot dead by a 15-year-old boy during a robbery attempt.
