Vaibhav Mittal, an Indian American, has been appointed as a judge in the Orange County Superior Court by the Governor of California earlier this month. With this, Mittal became the first person of South Asian origin to hold this post.
The 39-year-old Democrat was sworn in on September 10, replacing Judge Ronald L Bauer at the Country Court. Mittal, who has degrees in political science and electrical engineering from the University of California, worked in the semiconductor industry before joining New York University School of Law. He also worked as a lecturer at several universities, including the University of California and Irvine School of Law.
Mittal has served the South Asian community as a member of the South Asian Association in 2012. Between 2012 and 2014, he joined SABA-PIF as treasurer and co-chaired SABA-SC’s Judicial Evaluations from 2014 to 2018. He also worked as Assistant US Attorney for the Central District of California and was promoted to Deputy Chief in 2019.
Mittal currently is a member of the Orange County Bar Association’s Diversity Committee.
As reported by American Kahani, Mittal has argued in courts, and he has also trained and supervised lawyers. He has worked on matters concerning “public corruption, financial fraud, hacking, trademark infringement, child exploitation, immigration crimes, and drug trafficking,” the report indicated.
Mittal has reportedly encouraged law students to pursue careers in the public interest during his time as a lecturer at the University of California, reported American Bazaar.
