UUKMA Nurses’ Forum Offers Helping Hand to Malayali Nurses in the UK

Nurses from Kerala are well known for the quality of nursing education they get and the compassion and dedication they show, adorning the role of frontline warriors at times of health crises. They are among the most sought-after diaspora in various countries’ healthcare workforce.

The committed efforts of the Malayali Nurses in the UK had received the acknowledgement they deserved during the first outbreak of COVID19 in the UK. The media, opinion leaders and the public praised the emigrant nurses from Kerala for their valuable contributions. Some reports also pointed to the hectic work schedule, lack of proper protective equipment and the mental stress they go through amidst the adversities of the pandemic.

Recently, the Union of UK Malayali Associations(UUKMA) has come up with a helping hand to the Malayali Nurses working in the UK, amid the Omicron cases are increasing in the country.

The volunteers in the helpline, set up by the UUKMA Nurses Forum(UNF), offer support to nurses in COVID isolation with food and other necessities. As the hectic work schedule due to the increase in COVID19 cases takes a toll on the healthcare workers, the UNF helpline also aids the nurses to deal with mental stress and related issues.

UUKMA has set up the helpline service in collaboration with the NHS, as several Malayali Nurses have been in isolation after testing COVID positive. The helpline would be useful for the Malayali Nurses in the UK, particularly those who recently started working here, UUKMA said in a press release.

The helpline can also be used for information related to COVID. The helpline numbers are: 07813 624569, 07979123615, 07729 473749, 07946565837, 07985641921, 07503962127 and 07960357679.

UUKMA also plans to organise webinars on various issues concerning the Malayali diaspora in the UK. Further details will be updated on their Facebook page, and Twitter handle.
