University of Manchester’s British Council Scholarships for Women in STEM 

The University of Manchester offers over 1,000-degree programmes across the humanities, business, science and engineering disciplines. These programmes include foundation courses, bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees, PhDs and MBAs. Ranked 27th in the world according to the QS World University Rankings® 2021, the University of Manchester is a prestigious red brick university and is also a member of the Russell Group: a select network of leading research-intensive universities in the UK.

There are 25 Nobel Prize winners among its current and former students and staff. Making up 25% of the student population, The University of Manchester has the highest percentage of international students in the UK; as many as 180 nationalities are represented on campus. 

The University of Manchester also offers five fully-funded scholarships for female students from Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka to complete courses in STEM. This scholarship programme – supported by the British Council – aims to increase opportunities in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) for women. There are five British Council Scholarships for Women in STEM available in total from The University of Manchester. Scholarship applications are open to relevant offer-holders from January 2022. 

Funding Details 

 The scholarship covers: 

Tuition fees; 

A monthly stipend at the rate of £1,133 per month (for up to 12 months) to cover living costs, including accommodation; 

Accompanying child allowance for scholars consistent with UK visa requirements; 

IELTS exam fee (for scholars without a valid test of English); 

Return economy-class travel from home country to the UK; 

Study-related costs, such as essential travel, materials, equipment, thesis printing; 

Visa and insurance/NHS surcharge costs; 

Other costs (such as heavy baggage allowance). 

Eligibility 

To be eligible, the applicant must: 

Be a woman, or identify as a woman; 

Be a passport holder and permanent resident of Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan or Sri Lanka; 

Be in receipt of a conditional or unconditional offer for September 2022 entry to study on an eligible postgraduate course at The University of Manchester; 

Have not previously studied at degree level or higher in the UK or lived recently in the UK; 

Meet or be working towards fulfilling the English language requirement stated in the offer by the deadline; 

Demonstrate a case for financial support; 

Return to the country of citizenship for a minimum of two years after the scholarship award has ended; 

Have completed all components of an undergraduate degree that will enable the applicant to gain entry into a postgraduate programme at a UK university, and be due to start the postgraduate programme in the UK during 2022 by the time of registration.
