TERI School of Advanced Studies was founded by TERI (The Energy and Resource Institute) in 1998. Nestled in its green campus in Vasant Kunj, New Delhi, TERI is a higher education research institute specializing in sustainable development. The institute focuses on issues of energy, environment and sustainability and offers several master’s and doctoral programmes. It has rapidly emerged as a leader in sustainable development research and is the premier institute of India. TERI has signed memorandums with some of the best institutions in the world ranging from Yale University to Freie University of Berlin, Germany.
Then there is TERI School of Advanced Studies (SAS). An institute conceived to cater to the need of disseminating the vast reservoir of knowledge created by TERI, a non-profit motive independent research institute acknowledged worldwide for its contribution to scientific and policy research in the realms of energy, environment, and sustainable development. Since its inception, the deemed university has offered not just world-class education, but also an environment that enables its students to develop fresh perspectives on their subjects of study. This includes regular interactions with researchers, scientists and academicians.
TERI SAS offers Doctoral Programmes (Ph.D.) in seven major thematic areas such as Bioresources and Biotechnology, Business Sustainability, Energy and Environment, Natural Resources Management, Policy Studies, Water Science and Governance, and Legal Studies. Apart from these, the institute offers 14 masters programmes in multi-disciplinary subjects such as Environmental Studies and Resource Management, Climate Science and Policy, Public Policy, Sustainable Development Urban Development and Management etc. The approach of TERI SAS emphasizes real-world application of education and therefore offers highly creative, unique and multi-disciplinary programmes. These programmes are curated by experts and are constantly updated to match industry applications as the institute shares knowledge and infrastructure from The Energy and Resource Institute, a major research institution spread across the world.
The campus of TERI SAS is a great example of a green campus, putting the theory of the institute into practice. The campus was inaugurated by the then president of India, Pratibha Patil on 11 September 2008. While inaugurating the green campus, the president observed that it was “an exemplary example of combining traditional values of conservation and preservation of energy while building a state-of-the-art campus”. The university puts its theory to practice by building an energy-efficient campus showcasing the concept of modern green buildings. Besides an innovative, energy-saving architectural design, the building is equipped with several other technologies that help reduce energy consumption by 60% and potable water use by 25%. The campus is equipped with three types of cooling systems: the Earth Air Tunnel (EAT), Variable Refrigerant Volume System (VRV) and Thermal Mass Storage (TMS). The EAT used in the hostel utilizes the heat sink property of the earth to maintain comfortable temperatures inside the building, saving up to 50% energy as compared to the conventional system.
