The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of Japan offers scholarships to international students who wish to study at Japanese universities as undergraduate or research (masters / Ph.D.) students under the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarships Program.
MEXT Scholarship Coverage
The Scholarship is free and provides coverage of 2 years for master’s students and 3 years for doctoral students. This scholarship has the following benefits as well:
Allowances: Monthly Stipend Allowance, Preparatory Allowance. 144,000 yen/month (for a student of a Master’s Program), or 145,000 yen/month (for a student of a Doctoral Program)(an additional monthly stipend of 2,000 or 3,000 yen may be added to those students undertaking study or research in some designated regions of the country).
Education Fees: Fees for the Entrance Examination, Tuition Fee at Universities will be paid by MEXT.
Travelling Expenses: MEXT will cover your Round Airfare Travel Expenses from your Country to Japan. The Airline ticket will be for an Economy-class.
Accommodations: Residence halls for international students provided by universities.
Eligibility Criteria
The selection committee looks for candidates with excellent academic records in their undergraduate/graduate degrees. However, there are further requirements to be eligible for the scholarship:
- Prospective candidates must hold an English proficiency test score equivalent to B2 or above on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) scale (e.g. TOEFL iBT 72 or above, IELTS 5.5 or above)
- Prospective candidates must have completed an educational programme whose primary language of instruction is English that satisfies the entrance requirements to the Master’s Program or Doctoral Program at the Graduate School of Science, the University of Tokyo
- It is also necessary for the prospective candidates to have passed the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) with a score of N2 or higher
