Several US States to Observe October As Hindu Heritage Month

Several states across the US, including New Jersey, Ohio, Florida, Texas and Massachusetts, will celebrate October as the Hindu Heritage Month, as Hinduism has “contributed greatly” to America through its unique history and heritage.

The decision came after various Hindu organisations in the US announced the addition of another major festival, an entire month of festivals, in October as the Hindu Heritage Month. As reported by news agency PTI, the office of the governors of various states, congressmen and Senators recently issued the respective declarations.

“Communities of the faith have long served as beacons of hope, sharing their beliefs and bettering their communities through service, improving and inspiring the lives of thousands of followers around the world. Hinduism has contributed greatly to our state and nation through its unique history and heritage,” said the declaration.

The groups that represent Hinduism in America are now campaigning to formally declare “Hindu Heritage Month” by the US government.

The organisers urge President Biden to formally declare the month of October as the Hindu Heritage Month by an Executive Order.

Vishwa Hindu Parishad of America (VHPA) president Ajay Shah said that the organisation and other Hindu groups had sent over 20 letters to the state government by mid-July, requesting the proclamation of October as Hindu Heritage Month.

“The Hindu Heritage Month is a great opportunity for the Hindu community to remember our collective journey so far. From the ancient Vedic times, our golden eras, through the trials and tribulations of conquests and colonisation. If we look optimistically forward at the opportunity, we are recovering and rearticulating the Hindu worldview for future generations,” Kalyan Viswanathan, the president of the Hindu University of America, was quoted as saying by PTI.

He believes that the Hindu Heritage Month celebration will illustrate the diversity fundamental to Hindu civilisation.

As per organisers, the celebrations will include cultural programmes, webinars, multi-day conferences, walkathons, fashion shows and more, following all Covid protocol. These will be held in person as well as virtual.
