As the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced his government’s decision to repeal the farm laws, the Indian diaspora worldwide has welcomed the decision wholeheartedly.
Prime minister Narendra Modi on Friday announced the decision to repeal the three controversial farm laws. The farmers’ across the country have been protesting against these laws for the past year.
As part of the protests, on November 26, 2020, the farmers marched to the national capital Delhi, and they were blocked at the borders. Since then, the farmers started a sit-in protest at all major borders of Delhi, including Singhu, Tikri, Gazipur and Shahjahanpur.
The NRI communities in different parts of the world, including in Canada, the USA, Australia, and the UK, have staged solidarity protests and stood firmly for the demands of Indian farmers. Many even travelled to India to show their support for the farmers’ protest.

Soon after Modi’s announcement had come, the NRIs started celebrating the victory of farmers. They paid tributes to more than 700 farmers who died during the protest.
The UK based congratulated everyone who supported the farmers.
“Congratulations to everyone who supported the farmers from last one years. And salute to 700 farmers who lost their lives during the movement. You will always be remembered in golden words of history,” wrote UK based Sanyam Siwach.
US-based Anil Dutt Rathi also paid tribute to the farmers who lost their lives during the one-year-long movement.
“Congratulations to all, and paying tribute to all who lost their lives in this fight for right. Let’s keep them and their families in prayers. Unity is the only way to win big battles,” said Rathee.
Many foreign lawmakers have also welcomed the decision. The British Parliament Member of the Labour Party, Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi, tweeted on Friday, November 19, that he was “glad” that the “controversial” farm laws that led to the “valiant struggles,” were being repealed.
“Given #FarmersProtest valiant struggles, glad the controversial farm laws being repealed,” Dhesi said in a tweet.
Dhesi has always been vocal about the farmers’ protest. In January this year, Dhesi and 100 British MPs had asked UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson to raise the issue of the farmers’ protest with India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Ealing Southall MP Virendra Sharma reacted to the decision, remarking that he “is pleased to see that the Indian government has listened to the citizens and is rethinking the farm laws.”
“It is right for the Indian government to propose changes to the country to modernise systems, but some may go too far too fast. As someone who was born in India, I want to see the country thrive and go from strength to strength, and I look forward to the UK and India collaborating on ambitious international agreements”, The Indian Express quoted Sharma as saying.
While US Congressman Andy Levin tweeted that he was “glad to see that after more than a year of protests, the three farm bills in India will be repealed.”
