Hundreds of thousands of farmers started pouring into Delhi borders on Friday, marking one year of ongoing historic farmers’ protest against the three farm laws. Farmers across the country have been protesting against the three farm laws that are enacted by the central government.
As part of the protests against the farm laws, on November 26, 2020, the farmers marched to the national capital Delhi, and they were blocked at the borders. Since then, the farmers started a sit-in protest at all major borders of Delhi, including Singhu, Tikri, Gazipur and Shahjahanpur.
On Friday, farmers have arrived at the protest sites in large groups. Many have come in tractors. And still, many are on their way to Delhi borders.
Though prime minister Narendra Modi had announced the repealing of farm laws, farmers have maintained that the protest will continue as several of their other demands have not been fulfilled yet. The farmers, however, are prepared for a long haul by carrying vegetables, sacks of flour and lentils, spices and cooking oil on their tractor trollies.
“It has been a year of unmatched struggle mixed with happiness and sadness. We are fighting and winning. We will fight and win. MSP law is farmers’ right,” BKU national spokesperson Rakesh Tikait tweeted in Hindi.
The BKU- Bhartiya Kisan Union- is part of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), a farmers’ collective spearheading the protests across the country.
The protests are not just limited to Delhi borders. The farmers are holding protests and Maha Panchayats in their regions across the country.
In many places, farmers held tractor parades.
Other sections of the society, including women, workers, youth and students, have joined in solidarity with the farmers.
