Maastricht University is a public research university in the city of Maastricht, Netherlands. The university was founded in 1976 and has rapidly become one of the fastest-growing institutions across the world. Ranked as the 88th best university in the world by the Times Higher Education World Ranking and 4th among young universities, the University offers the 25th best master’s programme in International Business in the world according to Financial Times and possesses 23rd best Law faculty worldwide.
Unarguably one of the best educational institutes in the European Union, the University is known for accepting 55% international students and offering most of its master’s and doctoral programmes in English. However, the university is offering an innovative and advanced undergraduate programme called the UM Global Studies, which has rapidly assumed the role of an ideal multi-disciplinary undergraduate programme in the world.
The Global Studies bachelor-level study programme trains students to understand and develop solutions for complex global issues, transcending disciplinary and geographical boundaries. The study programme is unique with six faculties, each having their own disciplinary expertise, contributing equally to the educational content of the programme.
The study programme offers students the opportunity to perform a field study in the Global South (countries in Africa, Asia, Latin-America and the Caribbean) and intervene in a societal problem presented by an NGO, agency or a government, firm or a school and then write an interdisciplinary bachelor thesis. The programme also emphasizes language training, an essential skill for global leaders, and offers its students the opportunity to learn one foreign language such as Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian or Spanish.
