Know All About The Summer Programme For Students In Berlin

The Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres happen to be the largest scientific organisation in Germany. It is a union of 18 scientific-technical and biological-medical research centres. The official mission of the Association is “solving the grand challenges of science, society and industry”. Scientists at Helmholtz, therefore, focus research on complex systems, which affect human life and the environment. With approximately 1,100 employees, Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (HZB) is now one of the largest non-university research centres in Berlin and a member of the Helmholtz Association. 

Each summer HZB offers undergraduate students the eight-week summer student programme. Students from all over the world get the chance to work on their research projects in close cooperation with scientists. The programme offers students the opportunity to participate in the everyday work of research teams at their laboratories or experimental areas located at the HZB-campuses in Berlin-Wannsee or Berlin-Adlershof. Site visits are conducted at the synchrotron radiation source BESSY II, laboratories for solar energy research and an accelerator producing proton beams for eye tumour therapy accomplish the programme. 

The summer programme is open to the students currently studying for a degree in Physics, Chemistry, Material Science, Structural Biology, Mathematics or related disciplines. The students are provided the opportunity for a practical training period during July and August in Berlin. The students will work up to 40 hours a week at the laboratories. At the end of the programme, students will give a presentation describing their learning experience. The summer student programme in 2022 will take place from July 4 to August 29. 

Eligibility 

In order to qualify for the programme, prospective candidates must: 

Be a student (not Ph.D. candidate) in Physics, Chemistry, Material Science or related disciplines and have completed at least two years of full-time study in a major discipline at the university level 

Remain registered as a student during the stay at HZB. 

Have a good knowledge of English; knowledge of German would be an advantage. 

Submit a letter of reference by the end of the application period. 

Funding Details 

An internship contract of 8 weeks to work on a project. 

A subsistence allowance for the whole contract duration of 1800€ gross for external participants and 1000€ gross for students of the universities located in Berlin and Potsdam. 

Travel expenses will be subsidized up to an amount of 500€ to help the students with the costs of travel between Berlin and their residence.
