Know All About King Center’s Predoctoral Research Programme At Stanford Varsity

Stanford University is a private research university in Stanford, California, that was established in 1885. It is considered among the best universities in the world as it falls 2nd in the world in both Times Higher Education and QS world rankings. At Stanford, the King Center for Global Development offers a fully-funded two-year post-baccalaureate program. The King Center is a joint venture between the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research (SIEPR) and the Stanford Institute for Innovation in Developing Economies, known as Stanford Seed. The center was launched in 2017 as the Center on Global Poverty and Development. 

The King Center’s Predoctoral Research Fellows Programme is a full-time, two-year postbaccalaureate programme designed to prepare individuals for a fruitful career in academic research focused on issues related to global development. This multidisciplinary programme operates in partnership with the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Fellows are appointed as non-matriculated graduate students and fully engage in the intellectual life at Stanford University. 

Fellows work with King Center Faculty Affiliates on research projects and take courses at Stanford University for credit. The fellowship offers tuition, health insurance, and a living stipend. The King Center’s Predoctoral Research Fellows Programme particularly encourages applications from students belonging to low and middle-income countries, as well as from others whose backgrounds and experience contribute to the diversity (broadly defined) of the programme. The King Center is committed to creating inclusive research environments and fostering the growth of the next generation of researchers in global development. 

Eligibility 

Must hold an undergraduate degree (bachelors or foreign equivalent); 

A strong quantitative background and interest in learning cutting-edge research methods; 

A keen interest in issues around global development and poverty alleviation; 

Creative and independent problem-solving skills; 

An interest in pursuing a Ph.D. in a field related to global development.

Application form, including short answers on questions specifying one’s interest in the programme and specific King Center thematic areas, familiarity with programming languages (Stata, R, Python, Matlab, etc.), prior experience as a research assistant with independent research (e.g., a senior thesis), and other relevant information.
