An Indian medical student has been killed during shelling in Ukraine’s Kharkiv on Tuesday, March 1, confirmed the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Twitter.
“The Ministry is in touch with his family. We convey our deepest condolences to the family,” MEA Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said.
Several Indian students in Kharkiv had posted on social media that a student, believed to be from Karnataka, was killed when he had gone out to collect food. The videos posted on social media showed the shelling of different locations in Kharkiv, including an area near Kharkiv National Medical University (KNMU), which has numerous Indian students.
While the Indian embassy in Ukraine on Tuesday asked stranded Indians in Kyiv to leave the capital city urgently.
In an advisory, it asked the citizens to leave Kyiv by available trains or any other means.
“All Indian nationals including students are advised to leave Kyiv urgently today. Preferably by available trains or through any other means available,” the embassy said.
The advisory came amid increasing fighting between Russian forces and Ukrainian troops around Kyiv.
