Erasmus Mundus was started in 1987 by the European Union under the broader Erasmus+ programme and is short for European Region Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students. The education programme intends to further the goal of greater integration of Europe and enhance the quality of education through cooperation and international collaborations. It also aims to make education more inclusive through its scholarships and is dedicated to enhancing research and international collaborative networks. With a programme budget of 14.7 billion euros and 4,000 partner institutions, Erasmus offers the student extraordinary opportunities to learn, travel and conduct research.
The International Master in Security, Intelligence and Strategic Studies (IMSISS) is a 24-month Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree (EMJMD) awarded by a consortium of European universities – University of Glasgow (UK); Dublin City University (Ireland); Charles University in Prague (Czech Republic) and the University of Trento (Italy), working in conjunction with a wide network of associate partners, including the University of Cádiz (Spain) and OTH Regensburg (Germany). Students of this master’s degree programme will examine a broad range of contemporary security challenges, such as terrorism, civil war and conflict, mass migration, energy supply security, cybersecurity, and new technologies, and transnational and serious organized crime.
Students will also explore the intelligence and strategic approaches used by governmental and non-governmental actors to combat these threats. The degree adopts a unique approach to the study of security by combining theoretical, applied and empirical knowledge and skillsets. Students will have the opportunity to meet with and work alongside a range of academics and researchers from international partner universities and think tanks from around the world, as well as practitioner experts from governmental and industry security and defense sectors. Students on IMSISS will study across Europe in at least 3 cities and universities. They have the opportunity to undertake short study visits to other universities and can apply for work-based learning placements as part of the independent study semester.
The classes for the programme will be starting in September 2022. The programme uses small group seminars, tutorials and lectures, with a variety of assessment methods including written assignments (essays, policy briefs, literature reviews), individual and group presentations and projects, dissertation and oral examination. The course is full-time and at the end of the duration, the students will be awarded an international Master’s degree (IntM). Full funding is available for the students through the EMJMD scholarships. The applications for the 2022 entry will be opening soon. For further information, please click here.
