All You Ought To Know About The CWIT Fellowships

The Charles Wallace India Trust (CWIT) was established in 1981 as a Registered Charity. The Trust offers grants to Indian nationals, living in India and studying or working in the arts, heritage conservation or the humanities. There are more than a dozen fellowships to enrich academics (historians and social scientists), writers as well as translators for close to three months, at a specified host university in the UK. In addition, there are currently two artists’ residencies (visual arts) supported by CWIT at Gasworks and the Delfina Foundation.

During the fellowship, CWIT scholars will focus on their own work. They will also have ample opportunity to interact with their colleagues and take part in university life. Fellows (and artists) are expected to contribute to the life of the host institution by giving a lecture or leading a seminar presenting their own research or writing.

There are currently over 15 UK host institutions, which offer valuable opportunities (fellowships and other types of residencies) to Indians working in the arts, heritage (conservation or museums) or across the humanities. These include some of the most important contemporary arts organisations, as well as libraries, archives and museums and renowned universities such as the British Museum, University of London, King’s College London and the University of Cambridge.

How To Apply

For a comprehensive list of host universities click here. The universities will advertise the fellowship opportunities through their websites. There is no general deadline as these opportunities are spread throughout the year. If interested in a particular opportunity, the applicants are expected to check the deadline of that university and apply online. Fellows are chosen by agreement between the host university and CWIT. Similarly, the artists for the two residencies are chosen by agreement between CWIT, the Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation and the host organisation.
