All About The Breaking Barriers Studentship Award At The University Of Surrey

The University of Surrey is a public research university located in Guildford, Surrey, England. Tracing its roots back to 1891, the university has become one of the leading research institutions in the United Kingdom. As a major centre for mobile communications and satellite research, the university has established Surrey Research Park, which accommodates over 100 firms and provides research facilities, employing nearly 2500 people at the centre.

Recently, the University of Surry has introduced Breaking Barriers Studentship Award to address the under-representation of women, men and non-binary students within specific departments to help advance gender equality and diversity whilst funding aspiring leaders of research.

Available Disciplines and Eligibility 

This studentship is available to the UK and International applicants who identify as women in the following programmes: 

Chemistry 

Chemical and Process Engineering 

Physics 

Music and Digital Media Arts 

Computer Science 

Electrical and Electronic Engineering – Advanced Technology Institute; Information and Communication Systems; Space Engineering; Vision, Speech and Signal Processing 

Civil and Environmental Engineering 

Mathematics 

Mechanical Engineering Sciences 

Sound Recording 

The UK and International applications who identify as men in Psychology, and non-binary applicants in all Ph.D. programmes are eligible to apply. Applicants from any department where there are particular issues in relation to gender balance amongst their PGR community can also apply for the studentship. 

Funding Details 

The studentship provides a full tuition fee waiver for successful applicants. Besides tuition fee waiver, a sufficient stipend at UKRI rates p.a. (currently at £15,609) is also provided. A Research Training Support Grant of £3,000 is given to cover the funded period as well. The application deadline to apply for the studentship is 17th January 2022.
