At the centrepiece of the seventh annual International Day of Yoga in the heritage city of Mysuru, Karnataka, Prime Minister Narendra Modi practised yoga on Tuesday,
Following its establishment in the United Nations General Assembly in 2014, the International Day of Yoga has been observed on June 21 every year since 2015.
Yoga for Humanity
Around 25 crore people worldwide are anticipated to participate in various activities, doing yoga in unison in an effort to improve everyone’s health and wellness. “Yoga for Humanity” is the theme of this year’s Yoga Day celebrations.
Along with the Prime Minister, more than 15,000 people celebrated yoga on the grounds of Mysore Palace.
At the ceremony, yoga was practised by dignitaries, including the Governor of Karnataka Thaawarchand Gehlot, the Chief Minister of Karnataka Basavaraj Bommai, the Union Minister for Ayush Sarbananda Sonowal, representatives from the Ministry of Ayush, and the Government of Karnataka, and others.
The Ministry for Ayush designated 75 venues for Union Ministers to participate in the Yoga Day event to commemorate India’s 75th anniversary of independence.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced the concept of the International Yoga Day on September 27, 2014, in an address to the UN General Assembly. One hundred seventy-seven countries agreed with the draught resolution that India approved. On December 11, 2014, the United Nations proclaimed June 21 as the International Day of Yoga due to the practice’s widespread acceptance and rising popularity.
