Women Tennis: The Players To Watch Out For

In tennis as far as Men’s segment is concerned talks invariably veer towards Djokovic, Federer and Nadal. But in the women’s category, the scenario is radically different with no clear-cut domination. It is a pretty open space and last year’s slam events won by different women contenders only exemplify the same (Osaka (Australian Open), Barbora Krejcikova (French Open), Barty (Wimbledon) and Emma Raducanu (US Open). So, it is time to explore the women’s world of tennis to familiarize oneself with each contender vis a vis their rankings.

Ashleigh Barty

Is Ashleigh Barty the favorite at this year's US Open? Maybe, maybe not

The current reigning queen in the women’s category is the cynosure of all eyes right now. Barty won the French Open in 2019 and was the Wimbledon champion last year. However, like Osaka, the Australian also took a sabbatical from tennis after her exit from the US Open in 2021. Having said that, it would be foolhardy to underestimate Barty based on her prolonged absence. She recently gave enough indication of her potency by winning singles and doubles titles at Adelaide international. So, it won’t be an exaggeration to say that she is back in full vigour.

Aryna Sabalenka

The Belarusian player is presently the number 2 in singles and number 1 in doubles categories. Sabalenka to her credit has two Grand Slams: 2019 US Open and 2021 Australian Open. These apart, she has 16 WTA titles with ten in singles and 6 in doubles. Quite an unknown entity to begin with but rose to prominence due to her consistency since 2017 and that includes taking her national side to the final of the Fed Cup along with Sasnovich. Hence, this Belarusian woman happens to be a talent to watch out for in the future.

Garbine Muguruza

The Spanish lady is ranked number three in the world rankings currently and is an ocean of talent. Though she had two opportunities to grab the Australian Open last year Muguruza eventually lost to the resilience of Naomi Osaka. However, she ultimately proved her mettle last year by winning the end-of-the-season WTA Finals in Guadalajara. She had even come close to winning the Oz Open in 2020 but eventually lost to Kenin of the US. Hence, Muguruza will be itching to set the record straight this season, especially at Melbourne Park.

The Japanese player, who only last year kicked up a storm for refusing to attend pressers at the French Open and then bowing out of the same, has currently slipped out of the top 10 WTA rankings. However, she can still be a force to reckon with as she proved last year by winning the Australian Open before opting out of two major Slams: French Open and Wimbledon. So, the opposition would only do them a favour by not taking her lightly as she has been working hard to regain match fitness during her short break from the world of tennis.
