A non-profit organisation based out of Texas, US, named India House in Houston, has dedicated a grand stadium in the names of Indian-Americans, Dr Durga and Sushila Agrawal. The stadium will serve as a place for Indian-Americans to organise sports and cultural events.
Durga Agrawal, the founder and CEO of Piping Technology and Products, is part of the founding team and current Trustee of India House. He had envisioned bringing the culture of cricket to the US.
Dr Durga and his wife Sushila Agrawal equivalently have been involved with India House in Houston since its inception.
The couple helped build the stadium and have given significant donations to the Indian-American community in Houston.
“As a plaque was unveiled by Agrawal, the stadium lights were turned on, illuminating the 5.5-acre ground amidst a thunderous applause from the audience during a ceremony last week, attended by over 100 Indian-Americans, keeping in mind the COVID-19 protocols,” PTI reported.
The event was attended by nearly 125 people from the Indian-American community in the presence of Colonel (retd) Vipin Kumar, Executive Director of India House. He opened the ceremony by delivering a speech about the importance of the stadium to the community and Manish Rungta, President India House.
During the inaugural event, Vipin Kumar appreciated the effort of Dr Durga and his wife Sushila to build the stadium. Virendra Mathur also praised how Dr Durga serves on many boards like the University of Houston System as Board of Regents, Board of Directors of Asia Society Texas, and others.
“India House Houston has become a strong pillar of the community and continues to embark on their mission to unite cultures, create bridges and serve the community by bringing resources, education, services and Indian culture to Houstonians under the leadership of Vipin Kumar, Mathur, Rungta and the services of many other community members,” Agarwal told PTI thanking Aseem Mahajan, consul general of India in Houston, for the Consulate’s relentless support. “This stadium is another great addition to India House, and we hope that the family and friends will come to watch the local cricket games hosted at India House on Saturdays”.
During the inaugural event, Virendra Mathur, Trustee of India House, spoke about Durga and their friendship, which began from their days in India and their collective vision for India House.
