US Senate has confirmed Amitabha Bose, an Indian American attorney and transportation policy advisor, to be the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) administrator.
Bose was initially appointed by President Joe Biden as deputy administrator on January 22, 2021, by a vote of 68-29 on January 12. He held the same position during the Obama-Biden administration too.
The White House, on April 22, 2021, sent Bose’s nomination for elevation as administrator to the Senate.
According to his White House profile, Bose has spent nearly two decades in public service working to build a better, safer, more sustainable transportation system that provides opportunities to communities across the United States.
Bose’s leadership in senior-level roles at the US Department of Transportation and the FRA under two secretaries led to the FAST Act and MAP-21.
Bose, who has roots in Bihar, India, grew up in DeKalb County, Georgi, after arriving in the United States at age 5. Now, he resides in Arlington, Virginia, along with his family.
During the Obama administration, Bose had served as deputy administrator, chief counsel and senior adviser to the agency.
During those years, he was instrumental in guiding the agency through the implementation of Positive Train Control, implementation and oversight of the $10 billion intercity passenger rail program, and alcohol and drug testing.
In the Obama-Biden Administration, Bose held positions in the Transportation Secretary’s office as Associate General Counsel and Deputy Assistant Secretary for Governmental Affairs.
Before joining DOT, Bose was part of New Jersey Transit, New Jersey Department of Transportation, and US Congress as a transportation staffer.
He has been involved in some of the highest-profile rail and transportation projects, including the Northeast Corridor Gateway Program, California High- Speed Rail, Acela 2021 trainsets, and Liberty Corridor.
In addition to his decades in the public sector, he previously worked at HNTB, an infrastructure solutions firm, and advanced transportation and safety projects.
Bose has an AB from Columbia College, an MIA from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs, and a JD from the University of Georgia.
