The Events To Watch Out For In The Athletics World Championships 2022

The Athletics World Championships will be getting underway from July 15 to 24 this year in Eugene, Oregon, the US. The eighteenth edition will see participation from talented athletes across the globe and Indian supporters would be watching the events with keen anticipation. The country has sent a total contingent of 23 athletes, including its golden boy of the Tokyo Olympics Neeraj Chopra. So, let us understand what all make this event an absolute blockbuster.

Can Neeraj Repeat His “Tokyo Magic”?

From the corridors of anonymity emerged a young lad from Rohtak, who captured the imagination of the world after he won gold for his country in Javelin in the Tokyo edition of the Olympics. After the record-breaking show in the Diamond League this year, the championships will offer him another chance to establish his superiority further in the sport. However, to emerge triumphantly he needs to bring his A-game to the fore as Neeraj will be up against defending champion Anderson Peters (Grenada) and the dark horse Oliver Helander (Finland). It is not at all going to be easy for the current poster boy of Indian sports and we will know on July 24 as to who will be the last one standing

Will Elaine Thompson-Herah Better The 34-year-old Record Of Griffith-Joyner?

The athletic world record of Florence Griffith-Joyner (10.49 in 1988) is finally looking vulnerable after remaining unbroken for over three decades. About a year ago, Jamaica’s Elaine Thompson-Herah came within striking distance of breaking Griffith-Joyner’s record when the former clocked 10.54 seconds at the Hayward Field in Eugene, the same place where the Athletics World Championships is being held this year. Apart from Thompson-Herah, two other Jamaicans – Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Shericka Jackson – are also in imperious form and all these bode well for the Caribbean nation this time at the championships. Specifically, Fraser-Pryce, 35, is going great guns as she clocked 10.60 last year. To know whether any new milestone will be created or not we will have to wait till July 18, the day the final is scheduled.

The Clash Of The Giants In Men’s Shot Put

This segment will witness an ultimate battle between two United States throwers, Ryan Crouser and Joe Kovacs. Crouser happens to be a two-time Olympic champion but he has never got gold in the Athletics World Championships. However, this could be an ideal time to reverse the tide as he has remained undefeated this season and boasts of a world-leading throw of 23.12 metres. On the other side, Kovacs will be devising strategies to grab his third successive gold medal at the Worlds, and he is currently placed second on the top list for 2022. New Zealand’s Tom Walsh, the two-time Olympic bronze medallist, also has the ability to upset the plans of Crouser and Kovacs, as he touched 22.31m this season. The Shot Put’s Men’s category Final will be on July 18.
