Over six lakh Indians have given up their citizenship in the past five years, the Lok Sabha was informed on Tuesday.
Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai said in Lok Sabha that this year 111,287 Indians had given up their citizenship till 30 September 2021, bringing the total to 608,162 since 2017.
In a written response to a question, Rai said 133,049 Indians gave up Indian citizenship in 2017; 134,561 in 2018; 144,017 in 2019; 85,248 in 2020 and 111,287 till September this year.
As many as 13,383,718 Indian nationals are living in foreign countries, Nityanand Rai added.
Since India does not offer dual citizenship, many overseas Indians prefer to give up their citizenship to become citizens of their country of residence.
