If you are moving to a new country, you cannot drive vehicles in that country by using an Indian driving license as it is not valid. In such a case, you can apply for an international driving license that can be used to drive a car or a two-wheeler in several countries on a short-term basis.
You will be issued International Driving Permit (IDP) if you’re a resident of India and hold a valid Indian Driving Licence. Getting an IDP is not so difficult and you can fill out Form 2 or write to your local Regional Transport Officer (RTO) within whose jurisdiction you reside, mentioning the country you tend to visit and the duration of stay, etc.
Below are the documents you require before obtaining an IDP:
- Valid driving licence of your native country and photocopies
- Copy of your passport
- Attach a copy of the visa of the country you will be driving with the Form
- Air ticket for verification
- RTO requires you to fill the 4A form available at the local RTO
- Fees as prescribed along with user charges
Apply for the IDP at the same RTO from where your Indian driving licence has been issued. But if you are currently living in a different city or state other than the one mentioned in your license, then a ‘no objection certificate’ is required from your original licence issuing authority to apply for the IDP at a different RTO.
- Once all the documents are in place, visit your local RTO with the required documents
- Fill out ‘Form for the Issue of International Driving Permit’, or Form 4 with personal details such as name, address, driving licence number, etc. and pay the application fee.
- You would receive the IDP once your application is verified, which generally takes 3-4 business days.
