Raghunath Kadavannur, a native of the Thrissur district in Kerala, is contesting in the upcoming Vermelha local body elections in Portugal as the candidate of the Unitary Democratic Coalition (CDU). CDU is the coalition of the Portuguese Communist Party and the Ecologist Party, The Greens.
Raghunath has been living in Portugal for the last 11 years. When he was in Kerala, he was part of the Student Federation of India (SFI) and continued his political activities in Portugal.
“There has been a lot of rumours spreading that the people of Portugal are losing their jobs because of immigrants from other countries. Other parties are spearheading such a campaign, and it is necessary to prevent it,” Raghunath was quoted as saying.
Vermelha is a town located in Cadaval Municipality in Lisbon District, which is about 62 km north of Lisbon, the country’s capital town. The Portuguese local body elections will be held on Septem 26. The elections will be held in 308 municipalities across the country.
Antonia Costa-led Socialist Party, Rui Rio-led Social Democratic Party and Jeronimo de Sousa-led CDU are there in the upcoming election fray.
