The City of Burnaby, Canada, proclaimed September 5 as Gauri Lankesh Day, honouring the slain Indian journalist.
The Mayor of the City of Burnaby in Canada on August 27 declared September 5 of every year to be celebrated as ‘Gauri Lankesh Day’, to commemorate the death of Gauri Lankesh, who was shot dead outside her home in Bengaluru on September 5, 2017, allegedly by right-wing extremists.
In the proclamation, Mayor Mike Hurley described Gauri Lankesh as a “courageous Indian journalist who stood up for truth and justice” and “laid down her life… in her fight against repression and for human rights”.
Gauri Lankesh was a fearless journalist who wrote against superstition and growing fanaticism across the country.
Reacting to the news, eminent Teesta Setalvad tweeted, “Dedication. Across the he seas. Friday, August 27, the City of Burnaby proclaimed September 5 5as Gauri Lankesh Day. Mayor Mike Hurley made d proclamation tht describes Lankesh as a “courageous Indian journalist who stood up for truth and justice.”
