It is not easy being the manager of a prestigious club as league football is a cruel universe where defeats fall in the zone of zero tolerance. With Manchester United having a torrid time this season, it was almost evident that 2021 was going to be Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s last. Hence, the loss against Watford (4-1) turned out to be the last nail in the coffin for the Norwegian at the Man United. So, lit is time to look at the potential candidates who can take up the job at Old Trafford.
Zinedine Zidane
The French legend is being widely tipped to take over the vacant post at United. With almost a win percentage of 70, Zidane is the ideal manager to lift the spirit of a talented bunch reeling under some shocking outcomes. Apart from having a good rapport with Cristiano Ronaldo, he has had a good time with Real Madrid, helping them win the Champions League thrice. Also, Zidane is currently unemployed and this would minimize United’s financial liabilities. So, Zidane looks like a tempting prospect at present.
Erik Ten Hag
Credited with a win percentage of more than 65, Hag is another good option for the Man United. At Eredivisie, he has taken Ajax to glorious heights, the reigning champions. Under him, the Dutch football club also reached the Semi-Final of the Champions League in the 2018-19 season. However, in the end, it also depends upon his willingness to make a move to another club. Hag has already dropped enough hints that he wants to stick with Ajax for some more time. So, the question is, will the Devils bend their backs to woo him?
Mauricio Pochettino
The current coach at the PSG is another candidate to show interest in the job at the United. The Reds had even eyed him earlier after dumping Mourinho but Solskjaer ended up with the job. Now the field is clear but there is a question mark over an immediate move from Paris to the UK but he can make himself certainly available next summer. However, United need to consider his poor equation with Messi at the Paris club before appointing him as they cannot afford an ego clash at Old Trafford.
Brendan Rodgers
This is another name that has been doing the rounds for the job at Old Trafford. The Irishman has also shown immense interest in United. He has had fairly good stints at the league circuit with Swansea City, Liverpool, Leicester City etc and can certainly help Man United trace back their mojo. However, the major hiccup in terms of him going to Old Trafford is the financial one. Are Devils ready to spend big on the Irishman to bring him on board?
Luis Enrique
The Spaniard happens to be another interesting choice for the Devils, which require a binding force at the moment. During his first season as a manager at Barcelona, he won the treble and also helped them grab the La Liga title. But these came during the era of MSN. So, could he extract similar performance from a side with a sole impact player? Also, Enrique is new to the English league circuit as he is yet to coach a club outside Spain. However, his success as a manager of the Spain football team makes him one of the most suitable candidates for the job at Manchester United.
