Qatar Issues Two New Retirement Laws

Qatar’s legislative body, the Shura Council, had passed the two draft laws on social insurance and military retirement previously on February 14th.

Qatar’s Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani has issued two new retirement laws, making them the highest in the region. Law of 2022 on Social Insurance and Law of 2022 on Military Retirement has now been approved on 20 April 2022.

These regulations accommodate the needs and demands of retirees. They are also meant to promote a comfortable life for themselves and their families.

The decision guarantees a minimum pension of 15,000 QAR per month for all Qatari retirees in the nation starting from the date of issuance, with a special housing allowance of 4,000 QAR, as long as the pension does not exceed 100,000 QAR.

Qatar nationals who have worked for the government for 15 years are entitled to retirement pensions between the age of 55 and 60, according to the Retirement and Pension Law of 2002.

Citizens over the age of 40 can also retire if they have worked for 15 years.

However, the Qatari government does not provide retirement pensions to expats.

Many Qatari citizens on social media welcomed the decision of HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani to increase the pensions of retired individuals, and also the issuance of the military retirement and social insurance laws.

Many social media users said on Twitter that the Insurance Law and the Military Retirement Law represent the embodiment of Qatar National Vision 2030 in maintaining a high standard of living for citizens and achieving a decent life for them.

They added that they had been waiting for the law, thanking the state for the efforts to promote social, economic, and human development.

Others expressed their confusion regarding the announcement and asked for clarification. “Now the retirees get one end of service for every year after 20 years and a special bonus if they complete 30 years? We don’t understand,” said one person.

Issa bin Ahmed Al-Nasr tweeted that “The Insurance Law and the Military Retirement Law represent the embodiment of Qatar National Vision 2030 in maintaining a high standard of living for citizens and achieving a decent life for them.”

For his part, Fahd Al-Maliki said, “Congratulations to the retirees, the addition of the housing allowance to the salary, the specialization allowance for the military, and the issuance of the Military Retirement and Social Insurance Law. Frankly, we did not sleep from yesterday, waiting for the release of this good news.”

“We thank HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani for this timely decision, which provides for an increase in the pensions of retirees and the issuance of the military retirement and social security laws,” tweeted another one.

The General Retirement and Social Insurance Authority in a statement today thanked the Cabinet and the Shura Council for their joint efforts to launch a new era aimed at promoting social, economic and human development, in line with Qatar National Vision 2030 and the National Development Strategy 2018-2022.
