Indian Doctor, V Mohan, among World’s Top Scientists

Chairman and Chief Diabetologist of Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre, as well as President and Director of Madras Diabetes Research Foundation in Chennai, Dr. V. Mohan has been identified as one among the 5 scientists from India who are listed by Stanford University in the top 2% of all scientists in the world in the field of Endocrinology and Metabolism.

The other doctors on the list, along with Dr. Mohan, are Dr. Chittaranjan S Yajnik, Dr. AnoopMisra, Dr. Ambady Ramachandran, and Dr. Naibedya Chattopadhyay. Dr. Mohan, who tops the list with a C- score of 4.22, falls within the top 0.4 percentile of all scientists in his field, reported Medical Dialogues.

Dr. Mohan has been delivering care to patients with diabetes across the country via his centres and tele-medicine. He and his colleagues have screened a population of over 50,000 people in 42 villages near Chunampet in Tamil Nadu in south India and provided free diabetes treatment to hundreds of patients through this service. He has also established a rural diabetology service with a fully equipped mobile diabetes van and satellite connection with the initial support of the World Diabetes Foundation (WDF), Denmark, and the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and the National Agro Foundation (NAF).

The diabetologist serves on various national and international bodies in his field of specialisation and has published 841 original research papers. Overall, his published papers, which are at a count of 1320 have attracted 131,000 citations and an ‘h’ index of 132. His contributions in the field of epidemiology of diabetes, genomics of diabetes and fibrocalculous pancreatic diabetes are well known internationally and stands first among that of all medical doctors in India in any specialty of medicine. Dr. Mohan was awarded the Dr. Harold Rifkin Award for Distinguished International Service in the Cause of Diabetes Award by the American Diabetes Association and he is the first Indian to receive this award. He was also elected as Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and has received the Fellowships from all the Royal colleges of Physicians and all three science academies of India, in addition to the Fellowship of the World Academy Sciences. In 2012, Dr. Mohan was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India.
