Amid the ongoing pandemic, Class 12 board exams will be cancelled this year for the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and the council for the Indian School Certificate Examination (CISCE) students. The much-awaited decision has come after a meeting between high-profile ministers of the Central government.
On June 1, Prime Minister Narendra Modi conducted a meeting with union ministers, cabinet secretary and other stakeholders to discuss the situation of Class 12 board exams and review all the possible options on the exam.
The Supreme Court (SC) is scheduled to hear a plea regarding Class 12 board exams on June 3.
The plea, filed by advocate Mamta Sharma, demanded CBSE and CISCE Class 12 board exams be cancelled. The SC on May 28 had adjourned the plea for May 31. On May 31, the SC deferred the hearing till June 3. The Union Education ministry may take a call on the examinations only after the top court’s decision.
The petition came up for hearing on May 28 and was adjourned on Monday seeking directions from the CBSE and CISCE to call off the CBSE and ICSE class 12 examinations that are scheduled to be conducted between mid-July and late August.
On May 27, the SC, during the hearing of the matter, has sought the assistance of the Attorney General to decide the plea on cancel Class 12 board examinations and told the petitioner to be optimistic as the Centre, which indicates the ball could be in her court.
In April, both CBSE and CISCE issued a notification about the cancellation of class 10 examinations and postponing class 12 board examinations.
In the Meantime, Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister on May 31 informed that UPMSP (Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad) has already scraped the class 10th board examination and proposed to hold the Class 12th examinations in the second week of July if the Covid-19 curve keeps declining. The UP board has also decided to minimise the class 12 examination time duration this year because of the pandemic situation.
Several other state boards in the country, including Tamil Nadu, have decided to cancel class 10 examinations and postpone 12 examinations this year. Some of them are also expected to decide to commence class 12 board exams soon.
