Another weekend is about to kick in but there isn’t much to do as Corona threat has severely curtailed various outdoor entertainment options. In terms of live-action sports also it is a lean period unless and otherwise, you can endure another misadventure of the Indian cricket team at the Oval. However, there are some entertaining Indian sports dramas that you can enjoy with your family in the comforts of your homes on various OTT platforms. So, which ones are you planning to watch this weekend?
Sports Entertainers on Several OTT Platforms
Toofan (2021-Hindi-Amazon Prime)
This movie skipped the theatrical release and premiered directly on the streaming platform, Amazon Prime. Boxing is the central theme of this film and it showcases the tumultuous journey of Aziz Ali from a street fighter to a national level pugilist. The movie was directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and it starred Farhan Akhtar, Mrunal Thakur, Paresh Rawal etc. If you enjoy the cocktail of sports and some heavy-duty emotional moments then Toofan can easily be your cup of tea or coffee this weekend.
Saina (2021-Hindi-Amazon Prime)
This movie is based on the life of the ace shuttler from Hyderabad Saina Nehwal, who is a Haryanvi by birth. The movie takes you through the life of an effervescent young girl from Haryana who eventually wins a lot of national and international honors as a badminton player for India, including the Bronze at the London Olympics. The biopic is directed by Amole Gupte and has Parineeti Chopra as Saina alongside Mukesh Agrohari, Rohan Apte and others.
Sudani From Nigeria (2018-Malayalam-Netflix)
This is yet another gem of a sports drama from the content-heavy Malayalam film industry. The movie focuses majorly on the beautiful equation shared between a football coach from Kerala and a Nigerian footballer that is bound to leave a lump in your throat as the end titles roll in. This apart, the movie also shows the craze of soccer in the Malappuram district and throws light on the popular football tournament, Sevens, held in the region. The movie was directed by Zakariya Mohammed and it starred Soubin Shahir, Samuel Abiola Robinson etc.
Sarpatta Parambarai (2021-Tamil-Amazon Prime)
This is a Tamil movie directed by PA Ranjith and is set in the 1970s. It highlights the craze of boxing in North Madras and projects the bitter rivalries between the two warring families boasting of boxing legacies. It is also the story about Kabilan, who is forced to leave the boxing ring to return to the same arena for the last shot at redemption. Despite having a close to three-hour run timing, the film hardly feels like a drag and it is riveting from beginning till end. This movie is incomplete without its star cast comprising of Arya, Pasupathi, John Kokken, John Vijay etc.
Messi (2017-Bengali- MX Player)
Well, this is not a biopic on the Argentine legend as the title might suggest. The talismanic player is more of a metaphor in this Bengali movie. The movie directed by Ringo Bannerjee aptly captures the madness and frenzy for the game of football in Kolkata and clearly conveys that the obsession or the so-called devotion for the sport is not just confined to cities but every place in the City of Joy. Ronodeep Bose and Aryann Bhowmik played the two central characters as para footballers in the movie.
